Charleston is calling, and I must go

I packed my bags and became a Charlestonian without even visiting. I’m not sure if it was the palmetto palm-lined avenues the reminded me of the Notebook, (FYI, it was filmed in Charleston, SC) or the countless mouth watering, tummy filling world class restaurants but I immediately fell in love with the charm of this city.

During the time that I lived in Charleston, I discovered a few hot spots around the Lowcountry that I would always take friends and family to when they came to visit. The key is mixing in a few locals-only hideouts with fun tourist destinations that are worth the wait.

So, if you only had the weekend to explore the flavors, sights, sounds, and traditions found only in the Holy City, I suggest spending your weekend as follows

6:30-7:30 a.m. – Sunrise

Situated on the grounds of a real antebellum plantation, there’s no mistaking you’re in Carolina Lowcountry when you camp at the MOUNT PLEASANT / CHARLESTON KOA 3157 Highway 17 North Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466

Enjoy the great outdoors by taking a sunrise walk along the campground’s 1.5-mile nature trail, rent a boat or fish the 30-acre lake. To make room for all the yummy goodness you’re about to fill your belly with.

8-10 a.m. – Breakfast/Brunch

After watching the majestic sunrise over the water, you’re going to want to get some breakfast to power you through what will be an exhilarating day. Cook your own breakfast at your campsite to save a little money or head over to the Vintage Coffee Cafe where they serve breakfast all day.

11 a.m.-1 p.m. – Fun in the Sun

If history is more your speed, Charleston has that in spades. Charleston also has many plantations that are open to the public. One that I would recommend visiting is Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens a must-see stop on any trip to Charleston, S.C. After the tour of the home, guests are invited to walk the grounds, which feature stunning trees draped with Spanish moss and horses roaming in the pasture.

Then head over to Charleston City Market where you can meet locals, shop for great souvenirs, and enjoy local cuisine.

Get to know some of passionate entrepreneurs, traditions, and certified authentic Made in Charleston items especially the Old Whaling Co‘s bar soaps, bath bombs, salt scrubs and body butter. They also ship nationwide.

1-2 p.m. – Lunch

My favorite part of the day and there’s only one place I have eyes for. Callies Hot Little Biscuit is the best lunch spot for several reasons. It is a grab & go eatery that allows you to enjoy the taste of the town while exploring the Charleston City Market, one of the nation’s oldest public markets and the cultural heart of Charleston.

And if you cannot get enough of this sweet and savory treat, do not worry because these biscuits can be delivered right to your doorstep through their nationwide shipping.

3-6 p.m. – Shopping, Site Seeing, and a sunset cruise

Now that you’re full of delicious butter and biscuits, it’s time to hit King Street: the main drag in Charleston full of great shopping.  Followed by some walking to see the sights and learn about the beautiful homes you see on the peninsula, especially along the famous Battery.

Enjoy an afternoon dolphin sail or a sunset cruise aboard the Schooner Pride.

Passengers are welcome to raise and trim the sails with the crew or just sit back and enjoy.IMG_6612

7-9 p.m. – Dinner

I did mention this town likes to eat, right? Here’s the thing though: There’s no perfect place to go for dinner in Charleston, and that is because there are so many outstanding options. If you are thinking of dining downtown I suggest making a reservation on opentable or driving back to Mt. Pleasant to dine at one of these restaurants overlooking the water on the banks of Shem Creek. Tavern & Table, Water’s Edge, or R.B’s Seafood restaurant. If you decide to eat at Tavern & Table or R.B’s seafood might I suggest their shrimp and grits, and at Water’s Edge I recommend their seafood platter. And definitely, try the Oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer at all three restaurants.

10-11 p.m. – Drinks + Stargazing

Enjoy the perfect oasis after a long day in the Holy City by gathering around a campfire relaxing with family or friends back at your KOA campsite. They will even personally deliver firewood to your campsite before you return from a day well spent.
